Shared Mobility refers to any form of reliable transportation that is shared and accessible to anyone for their everyday needs. We envision successful models of shared mobility to be convenient, affordable, and efficient at moving people about their communities. When done right, shared mobility also reduces roadway congestion, saves Greenhouse Gas emissions, and enables greater access to the destinations in our cities and towns.
In Greater Boston, shared mobility begins with the MBTA. The rapid transit lines (red, orange, blue, green, and silver line bus), the regional commuter rail, the local bus, and the ferries are the backbone of the region’s transportation system.
Today, the BlueBikes system complements the MBTA in creating an interconnected and reliable shared mobility network. The BlueBikes system includes over 400 bicycle docking stations with over 4,000 individual bikes in circulation. The network spans 13 cities and towns including Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Newton, Revere, Salem, Somerville, and Watertown. As of May 2024, 72% of rapid transit MBTA stops were co-located with a BlueBikes station within an eighth mile, and 76% within a fourth-mile radius.
The BlueBikes system is also embedded within the network of protected bike infrastructure to provide people on bikes with safe and fast transportation throughout Greater Boston. Since the launch of the BlueBikes system in 2011, BlueBikes riders have taken over 23 million trips, with over a million rides logged in the first four months of 2024.
In early 2024, BlueBikes integrated 750 Electric-bikes in a cool-gray paint scheme to the existing fleet. From January to April, this small subset of bikes accounted for 30% of all BlueBikes trips and will continue to play a large role in Greater Boston’s expansion of the network to add more stations and bikes.
If you’re interested in trying out BlueBikes for yourself, make sure to visit the BlueBikes website and download the app! From there, you’ll be able to create an account to easily sign-out bikes in the system and check the live-updated map to see available bikes, open docking stations, and E-Bike charge levels. #getOnIt
